The label material you choose affects everything: how it looks on the shelf, whether it survives the refrigerator, how cleanly it applies, and how much it costs. Most small producers default to whatever their label printer recommends — but understanding the basics yourself leads to better decisions.

Here's a practical breakdown of the three most common label materials.


The Three Main Categories

Paper

The original label material. Still widely used for good reasons — affordable, prints beautifully, and can have a premium feel with the right finish.

BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene)

A plastic film that's become the workhorse of the food, beverage, and cosmetics industry. Water-resistant, conformable, available in matte, gloss, and clear finishes.

Polyester (PET)

A stiffer, more chemically resistant plastic film. Higher-end performance characteristics than BOPP, at a higher price point.


Paper Labels

How it's made

Paper labels are made from — paper. Face stocks range from uncoated matte (a natural, craft look) to high-gloss coated paper (bright, vivid print). Both come with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing.

Strengths

  • Cost: The most affordable face stock option, especially for short runs
  • Print quality: Excellent color reproduction, especially on digital and flexo presses
  • Aesthetic range: From rustic kraft paper to high-gloss premium finishes
  • Eco story: Available in recycled content and compostable options

Weaknesses

  • Moisture: Paper absorbs water. Even coated paper will eventually degrade in wet conditions.
  • Durability: Paper tears, scuffs, and wears with heavy handling
  • Temperature extremes: Freezer conditions cause most paper adhesives to fail

Best applications for paper labels

  • Dry pantry goods (pasta, spices, coffee, tea)
  • Baked goods and candy
  • Candles (glass jars at room temperature)

BOPP Labels

How it's made

BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) is manufactured by stretching polypropylene film in two directions ("biaxially"), which improves its strength, clarity, and dimensional stability. It's then coated for printability and paired with a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Strengths

  • Water resistance: Fully waterproof face stock — doesn't absorb moisture at all
  • Conformability: More flexible than polyester, wraps around curves more easily
  • Clarity: Clear BOPP is excellent for the "no-label look" — nearly invisible on clear glass
  • Print quality: Works with most printing processes; gloss and matte finishes both look premium
  • Cost: More affordable than polyester; the go-to upgrade from paper without major cost increase

Weaknesses

  • Stretch: Can stretch slightly under tension, which can distort labels if applied incorrectly
  • Chemical resistance: Not as resistant to oils and solvents as polyester
  • Temperature extremes: Standard BOPP adhesive may not hold below ~35°F without a freezer-grade spec

Finishes available

  • Gloss BOPP: High-shine finish, vivid colors, premium look
  • Matte BOPP: Soft, modern aesthetic; hides fingerprints better than gloss
  • Clear BOPP: Transparent label for no-label look; both clear gloss and clear matte available

Polyester Labels

How it's made

Polyester (PET — polyethylene terephthalate) is a more rigid, dimensionally stable plastic film. It's manufactured in a similar process to BOPP but with different polymer chemistry that gives it distinct performance characteristics.

Strengths

  • Dimensional stability: Doesn't stretch or shrink — critical for precision label placement
  • Chemical resistance: Stands up to oils, solvents, cleaning chemicals, and harsh environments
  • Temperature range: Better performance at both high and low temperatures than BOPP
  • Durability: More resistant to tearing and abrasion
  • Clarity: Excellent — available in crystal-clear versions

Weaknesses

  • Cost: More expensive than BOPP, often significantly
  • Conformability: Less flexible than BOPP — harder to apply on very curved or small surfaces
  • Printing: Requires specific printing processes and inks; may not be compatible with all print providers

Best applications for polyester

  • Cleaning products and household chemicals
  • Industrial and commercial products
  • Very small labels on small diameter containers (essential oil vials, sample sizes)
  • Products exposed to solvents or aggressive cleaning
  • Applications where label stretching would be a functional problem
  • High-end cosmetics and pharmaceuticals where premium material is expected

Choosing Your Adhesive

The face stock is only half the equation. Adhesive performance matters just as much:

  • Permanent acrylic: Most common; good for most room-temperature applications
  • Freezer-grade: Stays flexible and bonded at sub-zero temperatures; required for frozen products
  • Removable: For products where customers should be able to peel labels off
  • High-tack: For difficult surfaces (textured glass, certain plastics, rough surfaces)
  • UV-resistant: For outdoor applications with sun exposure

Always specify both the face stock AND the adhesive when ordering labels. Ask your label printer for recommendations based on your container and storage conditions.


Application and Labeling Equipment

Different materials behave differently on labeling machines:

  • Paper is the most forgiving — applies cleanly with minimal pressure settings
  • BOPP requires consistent tension and even roller pressure to avoid edge lifting and silvering
  • Polyester is the most rigid — requires firm, consistent pressure across the full label width
