Why "Waterproof" Is More Complicated Than It Sounds
"Waterproof" means different things in different contexts:

Label Face Stock Options
Paper labels
Paper is the cheapest label material and looks great — until it gets wet. Even "water-resistant coated paper" will eventually absorb moisture and degrade if submerged or kept in a very humid environment.

BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene)

Polyester (PET) labels
Polyester is more dimensionally stable than BOPP — it doesn't stretch or shrink with temperature changes. It's also more resistant to chemicals and solvents, which matters for cleaning products, industrial products, and anything that might be wiped down with a chemical cleaner.
Best for: Products exposed to oils, solvents, or cleaning chemicals. Also excellent for very small labels where dimensional stability matters.
Limitation: Less conformable than BOPP on highly curved surfaces. Slightly higher cost.
Vinyl labels
Vinyl labels are extremely durable — used for outdoor signage, vehicle graphics, and industrial labeling for a reason. They're fully waterproof, UV-resistant, and handle temperature extremes well.
Best for: Outdoor products, coolers, water bottles meant for outdoor use, any product that will be exposed to prolonged sunlight, rain, or harsh conditions.
Limitation: Higher cost, thicker material, overkill for most food/cosmetic applications.
Synthetic paper (Teslin, PP synthetic)
Synthetic paper looks and prints like paper but is made from polypropylene or polyester. It's waterproof and tear-resistant. A good middle ground when you want a paper look with water resistance.
Best for: Bath products, cleaning products, artisan goods where you want a natural paper aesthetic but need moisture resistance.
The Adhesive Matters as Much as the Face Stock
A waterproof face stock with the wrong adhesive will still fail. Here's what matters:
Standard permanent acrylic adhesive
Works for most room-temperature applications. Can fail at very low temperatures (below 35°F) as the adhesive becomes rigid and loses bond strength.
Freezer-grade adhesive
Formulated to stay flexible and bonded at sub-zero temperatures. Required for frozen food products, ice cream, frozen beverages — anything that will be labeled at cold temperatures or stored frozen.
Important: Freezer labels must be applied to a cold (or room-temp) surface — you can't apply a label to a frozen container and expect it to stick. The surface must be frost-free and above the adhesive's minimum application temperature.
Ice bucket / high-moisture adhesive
For products that will sit in ice — beer, wine, craft soda — you need a label and adhesive specifically designed to handle immersion in ice water. These use specially formulated adhesives that maintain bond strength when wet. Not all BOPP labels qualify — make sure your label supplier confirms ice bucket compatibility.
UV-resistant adhesive

Application Tips for Waterproof Labels
Film labels (BOPP, polyester, vinyl) apply slightly differently than paper:
- No surface moisture — more critical for film labels because there's no forgiveness
