Bottle Labeling Methods

(or ‘How do I label my jars, cans and bottles?’)

The labeling machine that your company chooses to use can be a great asset. Depending on the brand and model of labeler chosen a company can expect to recoup their cost very quickly.

First, lets define what a ‘bottle’ is exactly. That may seem like a simple answer, but for the purposes of this page a ‘bottle’ is either a  round, cylindrical, or oval shaped container. They can be any size as long as they have a rounded body. There are 4 ways to apply a label to your bottle.  A partial or full wrap around label, a horizontal panel label and a vertical panel label.

Wrap Around Labeling

A wrap around label is one that wraps partially or completely around the circumference of the bottle.

Wrap around labels provide a larger printed area for product branding and information. The application style depends on the diameter of the container. Bottles with a smaller diameter (e juice & e liquid bottles, lip balm tubes, travel shampoo bottles) can be labeled very quickly as shown in the video on the right. A smooth rolling motion on the container combined with a smooth rolling motion on the advancing knob should enable you to easily label up to 1200 labels an hour. Larger diameter containers can also easily be labeled as shown on the video to the left. The bottle is manually rolled over the padded roller to apply the label. The labeling speeds you will be reaching will vary from 500 to 800 depending on the diameter of the container and how much of the circumference is being labeled.

Wrap Around Label Example Video

To label a bottle with a wrap around label, you will need to have your labels oriented in position #4 or ‘left side leading’. What that means is that the left side of the label will be coming off of the label backing first. The labels present with the sticky side of the label facing up so that when you place your container on the labeler, the label will make contact in the correct position to be readable by the customer.  To look at the different label orientations, please CLICK HERE to see our orientation chart.

Panel Labeling

A panel style label is a label that covers only a portion of the outer circumference of the bottle. You can label vertically or horizontally. Which method you use will depend on your container and how much coverage you’ll want on that container. Panel style labeling is some of the fastest and easiest available for table top label applicators. Usually the container is labeled with a fast swipe over the padded application roller and you’re done.  Labeling in this style you should be able to label between 600 and 1200 containers an hour. The size of the container and label will determine just how fast you’ll be able to go.

Horizonal Panel Application

A panel label can be labeled with labels facing any orientation.  There are some directions that are better than others, but for the most part it really depends on what you’re labeling and how you want your label to appear on the container. For example; in the ‘Horizontal Panel Application’ image, you’re seeing the bottom of the bottle pointed towards the left so the base of the bottle hits the guide rail instead of the cap or opening of the container. This is what orientation #4 or ‘left side leading’ means. The left side of the label comes off the label roll first and presents sticky side up so it can make contact with and adhere to the bottle. On the ‘Vertical Panel Application’ image you’re seeing the bottom of the bottle facing away from the operator and the opening of the container facing them. This is what orientation #1or ‘top off’ looks like.  The top of the label is what comes off the roll first. The label presents sticky side up so your bottle can be positioned by the guide rails and make contact with the label.
